Basic Care Instructions, and Information for New Quail Parents:

  • Provide hiding places like small boxes or huts to help the chicks feel secure

  • Keep quail with quail, they do not mix with chickens or other birds

  • Prevent bullying and injury: once mature keep flock ratios to 4-5 females to 1 male (You can return your extra males to me if you do not want to process them)

  • Quail are social, do not keep them alone they will be sad, give them at least 3 other roommates

  • Toxic to quail: CEDAR shavings, do not use! Do not grow tomato plants or pepper plants in or around their outdoor aviary

  • Give mature quail at about 1 foot of space per bird. Over crowing creates fights amongst birds, and too much space makes them feel unsafe as they are ground dwellers

  • Once the chicks are fully feathered (around 4-6 weeks) move them to a larger pen or coop, without heat

  • Clean their enclosure every week, use pine shavings

  • Chicks mature between 6-8 weeks old

  • How do I know they have matured? Females lay eggs, males crow in the morning

  • When do hens start to lay eggs? By 6-8 weeks, as long as they are happy and not stressed

  • How many eggs do my quail lay per week? Hens lay about 5 per week for the first 2 years
